Electro Stimulation

Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles into points along the body’s acupuncture channels and manipulating these to move energy.

Manipulation involves gently twisting the needles clockwise or anticlockwise and in some cases simultaneously lifting them up and down to increase depth of penetration and stimulation of the point. It is typically carried out when the needle is inserted and may be repeated by the therapist during the period the needles are left in.

Electro stimulation, also known as electro acupuncture, involves passing a mild electric current between a pair of acupuncture needles. It is done with an electro stimulation machine and applying electrodes to the handle of the needle.

The effect is the same as manual manipulation by the acupuncturist and it allows for continuous stimulation at a set energy level for a prolonged period. Because multiple points can be stimulated at the same time the machine can achieve what the Acupuncturist would be unable to do.

It is most commonly used in cases of severe or chronic pain.
