Digestion

Our digestive system, commonly referred to as the “gut”, is where the action is in our bodies, it has a stake in everything!

It is responsible for telling your brain when you are full so if you want to lose weight you must work with it.

95% of the “happy chemical” Serotonin is in the gut so if you want to fight anxiety or depression you must work with it.

70-80% of the body’s immune system is in the gut so if you want to fight disease you must work with it.

There are 100 million neurons in your gut that communicate with the brain so if you want to stay clear of brain fog you need to work with it.

Finally, all healing, regardless of the condition, begins in the gut. If you are unwell and want to get better then you must work with the gut!

What are Digestive Disorders?

To live a happy and full life, to fell energetic and enthusiastic we must look after our gut. It is responsible for breaking down our food, extracting the nutrients that the body needs and passing them into the bloodstream to support all of the bodies activities.

If we choose bad food options, rush our food, or don’t eat regularly then over time the gut suffers and stops being able to do its job well. When the body is not adequately nourished then problems start to occur and only get worse.

Good bacteria are responsible for most of the great work in the gut and the problems start when bad bacteria, which will always be present to some extent, grow to outnumber them and compromise their function. This generally leads to the gut wall being damaged and substances getting into the bloodstream which should not be there, causing food intolerance.

For many people gut problems first manifest as regular indigestion, bloating, wind or weight gain. These cause discomfort and impact on our quality of life. Left untreated they get worse and can lead to diseases of both the mind and body.

Unfortunately many people resort to treating the symptoms of digestive issues rather than the root cause. Digestive remedies are big business and the clever advertising they use makes them very inviting should you have an issue. Very often the message is that you can eat whatever you want because popping the remedy will sort you out quickly and easily. Unfortunately, relying on these encourages people to persist with bad habits and just makes things worse.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Most digestive disorders are highly treatable and you can reverse both the digestive symptoms and other conditions which they may have created.

Acupuncture alone cannot treat a digestive disorder, it can only support the process. What is needed is to change the diet, getting rid of what has caused the problem, and introducing better options to recharge the gut and support its healing.

Typically improvement will be seen in 4 to 6 weeks and complete healing is possible within 3 months. The process is hard over the first few weeks but then becomes far easier as the patient sees the results and starts to feel better.

The results are very often quite spectacular,  “brain fog” disappears and patients feeling clearer in mind and better able to take on mental tasks. They feel more positive and enthusiastic about life, and their energy levels increase making them want to be more active. Patients with inflammation based conditions, for example joint pain, see these greatly improve and may become less reliant on medication and over the counter remedies.
