Mental and Emotional Conditions

Everybone is faced with major upheavals or emotional distress at some time in our lives through events such as the loss of a loved one, breakup of a relationship, family disharmony, or changes at our place of work.

These circumstances can trigger a myriad of unexpected feelings and behaviours from panic attacks, major disruptions in sleep and eating, to full-on depression.

Acupuncture helps to rebalance the body’s internal environment, addressing the symptoms of emotional upheaval. More importantly it treats the root cause of the problem and builds a coping system to help the patient better handle subsequent emotional disturbances.

What are Mental Health Disorders?

These are medical conditions which disrupt our thoughts, feelings, mood and ability to relate to others. They interfere with our normal daily functioning resulting in diminished capacity to handle the ordinary demands of life.

Mental and Emotional conditions include

  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Panic Disorder
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Borderline Personality Disorder

These disorders can affect persons of any age, race, religion, or income and are extremely common. It is estimated that almost one third of all adults will experience mental illness at some point in their lives.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Chinese Medicine, of which Acupuncture is one treatment discipline, views mental illness as an imbalance within the body which disrupts the flow of vital energy. Such imbalances can arise through genetics, a person’s lifestyle, diet, or injuries, to name just a few factors. The good news is that recovery is possible.

As an experienced therapist I will work with you to identify the root cause of the imbalance and devise a personalised treatment plan which includes acupuncture and adjustments to diet and lifestyle factors which may be contributing to the problem. Your plan may also include supplements to help your body or address a vitamin or mineral deficiency.

Addressing the root cause, rather than just the symptoms, gives the patient real relief from the condition, lessening the likelihood of reoccurrence and helping them to better handle the ups and downs of daily life.
